C’est grâce aux conseils de Matt Chojnacki, rencontré à Sydney que nous nous aventurons sur les routes australiennes. Presque 6 heures de route, une amende, quelques demi-tours et une forêt d’eucalyptus plus tard, nous arrivons enfin à Crescent Head, à quelques 400 kilomètres au nord de Sydney. It is off the back of Matt Chojnacki’s recommendation, who we met in Sydney, that we find ourselves cruising down the Australian motorway. Six hours, one fine, a few U-turns and a eucalyptus forest later, we finally arrive at Crescent Head, some 400km north of Sydney.

Il n’y a pas grand monde dans les rues, il n’y a pas grand monde tout court… C’est à vrai dire un petit village posé sur une pointe de roche avec son golf, son camping et une vague parfaite qui déroule juste devant. Le soleil est à peu près au zénith, pas un nuage et il n’y a que deux personnes dans l’eau… Comme l’indique une stèle plantée devant la vague, ce fut le premier endroit où se sont arrêtés les précurseurs du surf, originaires de Sydney, dans leur quête de la « vague parfaite »… On comprend pourquoi. The sun is almost directly above us, with no clouds in sight and only two people in the water. And as a headstone planted in the ground tells us, this was the first place that the pioneers of surfing, originally from Sydney, stopped on their quest for the ‘perfect wave’...it is easy to see why.
