Nous voilà, Mathieu Maréchal et moi-même Thomas Lodin, arrivés en Australie pour un mois de pérégrinations sur la côte Est. This is Mathieu Marechal and myself, Thomas Lodin, just arrived in Australia for a month of travels along the east coast.

Un voyage qui, rythmé par les rencontres, les découvertes de spots, les performances de Mathieu dans les vagues, mes centaines de clichés, nous amènera progressivement à Noosa où Mathieu est attendu pour participer au mythique Noosa Festival, rencontre internationale des meilleurs longboardeurs de la planète. The pace is set for this trip from the very outset, with haphazard encounters, chance discoveries of exceptional places, Mathieu's incredible performances in the waves and the reams of film I’m getting through with my camera... Our path eventually leads us to Noosa, where Mathieu is to participate in the legendary Noosa Festival, an international event with some of the very best the world has to offer in longboarders.

Sydney, notre premier point de chute, est une capitale attrayante puisqu’elle offre deux façades : l’effervescence de la ville mais aussi le calme des baies. Sydney, our first port of call, is a stunningly attractive city boasting two distinct sides to it : the excitement and distraction of a large metropolis located alongside the calming tranquillity of the coastline.

C’est sur les « Northern Beaches » à Brookvale tout près de Manly, que nous retrouvons Matt Chojnacki pour une session matinale. Tradition australienne oblige, un café s’impose en haut de la plage avant de se mettre à l’eau. It’s on the "Northern Beaches" of Brookvale (just next to Manly), that we meet up with Matt Chojnacki for an early morning surfing session. Australian tradition requires that everyone enjoy a coffee on the beach before stepping into the water.

On est dimanche, toutes les familles sont à la plage même s’il ne fait pas très beau. Tournois de sports pour les plus jeunes des clubs de lifeguards sous le regard attentif de leurs parents et surf pour tous les autres. It’s a Sunday, and despite the weather not being all that great, the whole beach is packed full of groups of families and friends. There are sports tournaments held for the younger children who are members of the lifeguard clubs, under the watchful eyes of their parents, and there is surfing for everyone else.

Matt travaille avec son père dans la restauration / carrosserie de voitures, sa seconde passion après le surf, au sein de l’atelier Taylor & Botham, créé par son père en 1963 où il passe son temps à restaurer les classic cars qu’il déniche ou qu’il importe. Il nous y amène car il a une surprise à nous montrer… Matt works with his father in car restoration/bodywork, his second passion after surfing, at the Taylor & Botham workshop, which his father set up back in 1963. He spends his time restoring classic cars that he either hunts down himself, or has imported. He takes us to his father's workshop... he has a surprise in store for u !

La veille justement, il vient de recevoir des Etats-Unis par container une Chevrolet de 51 qu’il attend depuis quatre mois ! Je vous laisse imaginer son sourire quand, lorsqu’il met le contact, le moteur se met à vrombir… Just the day before, he received a 1951 Chevrolet shipped from the United States by container which he had been expecting for four months ! I'm sure you can imagine the smile on his face when he puts the keys in the ignition and the engine starts revving...

Un bijou parmi d’autres puisqu’en soulevant quelques draps nous découvrons un VW combi pick-up en pleine restauration ainsi qu’une surf wagoon Valiant… His new Chevrolet is a jewel among many... as we lift up a few of the sheets around us, we discover a VW Transporter Pick-Up in the process of being restored and a Valiant Surf Wagon..

C’est lors de cette visite atypique que l’on comprend vraiment la façon tout autant atypique dont Matt surfe. De la même manière qu’il est inspiré par les voitures d’époque, son surf et sa manière de lire les vagues sont directement inspirés des surfers et des planches de la même époque ! It’s while we’re visiting his unusual workshop that we both come to understand just how atypical Matt's surfing style is. In the same way that he finds inspiration in his vintage cars, his surfing and the way he reads the waves are directly inspired by surfers and boards from the very same era !

Bercé tout près de l’atelier de Nat Young ou de Bob McTavish, il a eu la chance d’en arpenter dès le plus jeune âge les salles de shape… Depuis il surfe des planches mythiques qu’il shape lui-même avec McTavish et il le fait plutôt bien ! He was raised within close proximity to the workshops run by Nat Young and Bob McTavish, where he had the chance, from a very early age, to wander through their shape rooms... Ever since, he’s always surfed with a range of mythical boards that he’s actually shaped himself alongside McTavish... and made a pretty good job of them too !
